Adam Bricks - City Songs

“I know too many people, who look too old.”

- Day At The Park

I meet Adam through mutual friends and would enjoy running into him at a show or bar. After working on numerous posters for his shows, he asked if I would be interested in designing his debut album, and of course I said yes. I came over to his place after work on a quiet humid winter Friday night to pick his brain about his album. We shared a couple of beers and listened to Tom Waits. At the time he was living in a one-bedroom a block away from Westheimer; down the street from the legendary Numbers nightclub. Adam told me the album was written while living and moving from New York City, New Jersey, and back to Houston. The name of the album, City Songs, is straight forward like his vocal delivery and music with a wink and nod to those present. I wanted to capture a literal snap shot of the time and place where he was when he was finishing the album. So after finishing our beverages, we walked around his neighborhood at the time.

The photograph on the cover is his old bus stop on Westheimer. The typeface used, Gotham was a nod to New York City, where he lived previously. Laying it out front and center over the image of Houston, I wanted to present the album straight forward like his songs and layer the two geographical locations, “The Big Apple” meets “Bayou City”.
